Testosterone Travels

I visited a skateboard park today. I had not been to one in a long time. It was fun to watch. It was interesting to watch.

There’s a lot of showboating that goes on at a skateboard park. There is a lot of fun and false fronts.

The little kids are great. Most of them are little boys. There were a couple little girls today. They like to talk with each other. They also like to show each other how to do tricks. Anyone is welcome. They sometimes congregate in small clusters and then, like little birds, flutter of in different directions only to rejoin in another section of the park.

The teen guys are “hanging out” and making fun of each other. They are more cliquish than the younger kids. They applaud each other at times. Mostly, they harangue each other. They typically stay together. Little cliques in different sections of the park. There is a group by the half pipe and they are not moving. There is a group by the water fountains and they are not moving. There is a group by the corner ramps and they are not moving. They are probably cliques outside the park as well.

Then, there are the independents. Some of them are on boards and some on blades.

Today, I see about five independents. They are doing their own thing. The independents are older. Some look college age some look like they are adults. Maybe they are here with their younger children.

By and large, the independents are very good compared to the rest of the park inhabitants. One boy on blades has been zooming about. He leaps, jumps, and grinds at every opportunity. He seems very aggressive. One heavy-set man has been riding in the bowl since I got here. He is very smooth. Lots of momentum. A couple of the others look like they are either here to practice or have fun.

The cliques look on.

Testosterone travels around the park. Sometimes envious. Sometimes proud. Sometimes carefree.
